Arabic Parts (Lots) - Hidden Points of Destiny

8 min read

What Are Arabic Parts

Arabic Parts, also known as Lots or Sahm in Arabic, are sensitive mathematical points in an astrological chart that reveal hidden layers of meaning beyond what planets and houses alone can show. They are calculated by taking the distance between two planets or points and projecting that distance from a third point, usually the Ascendant. While the concept originated with the ancient Greeks, particularly Hermes Trismegistus and later Vettius Valens, it was Arab astrologers of the medieval period who vastly expanded the system from a handful of Lots to hundreds covering every conceivable area of human experience, from wealth and marriage to religious devotion and the manner of death.

The Part of Fortune

The Part of Fortune, or Pars Fortunae, is the most widely known and used of all Arabic Parts. For a day chart (Sun above the horizon), it is calculated as Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. For a night chart, the formula reverses to Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. The resulting point reveals where in the chart material fortune and worldly happiness naturally flow. When the Part of Fortune falls in a strong house and is well-aspected by benefic planets like Jupiter or Venus, it indicates areas of life where good luck and abundance come easily. Its house placement shows the life domain most blessed, while its sign colors the nature of that blessing.

The Part of Spirit

The Part of Spirit (Pars Futurorum) serves as the spiritual counterpart to the Part of Fortune. Where Fortune addresses material wellbeing and worldly success, Spirit reveals the soul's purpose and the path of conscious action. Its calculation reverses the Fortune formula: for day charts, Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon; for night charts, Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. Medieval Arab astrologers considered Spirit to be equally important as Fortune but operating on a higher plane. A strong Part of Spirit suggests a person whose deliberate choices and conscious will lead to fulfillment, whereas a strong Part of Fortune may indicate luck that comes without effort.

Other Major Parts

Beyond Fortune and Spirit, Arab astrologers developed Parts for every significant area of life. The Part of Marriage (Ascendant plus Venus minus Saturn) indicates partnership destiny and the quality of romantic unions. The Part of Commerce (Ascendant plus Mercury minus Sun) reveals business acumen and trading success. The Part of Children (Ascendant plus Jupiter minus Saturn) shows fertility and the nature of one's relationship with offspring. The Part of Death (Ascendant plus eighth house cusp minus Moon) was used cautiously to understand life's final chapter. Abu Ma'shar alone listed over 97 different Parts in his major works, each providing a specific window into destiny.

Calculating Arabic Parts

The general formula for any Arabic Part follows a consistent pattern: Ascendant plus Point B minus Point A. All calculations are performed in absolute zodiacal longitude, where Aries 0 degrees equals 0 and Pisces 29 degrees equals 359. If the result exceeds 360, simply subtract 360 to find the final position. The key lies in understanding which planets or points are used for each Part and why. The Part of Fortune, for example, maps the Sun-Moon relationship onto the horizon, effectively showing where the lunar principle of receptivity meets the solar principle of vitality in the context of one's personal orientation to the world.

Interpretation Techniques

Interpreting Arabic Parts requires attention to several factors simultaneously. First, the house where the Part falls indicates the life area it activates. Second, the sign colors its expression with elemental and modal qualities. Third, the condition of the Part's dispositor, the planet ruling the sign where the Part falls, determines how well the Part can fulfill its promise. Fourth, aspects from other planets to the Part either support or challenge its expression. Arab astrologers also paid close attention to the Part's ruler in the context of the whole chart, examining whether it was dignified, combust, retrograde, or otherwise modified. A Part is only as strong as its ruling planet's ability to deliver.
