Overview
Libra is a zodiac constellation covering about 538 square degrees, positioned along the ecliptic between Virgo to the west and Scorpius to the east. It is one of the fainter zodiac constellations, with its brightest star Zubeneschamali (Beta Librae) shining at magnitude 2.6. The star names reveal the constellation's ancient connection to Scorpius: Zubeneschamali means the northern claw and Zubenelgenubi (Alpha Librae) means the southern claw, as these stars were once considered part of the Scorpion. Libra is the only zodiac constellation represented by an inanimate object. It is best observed during June and July evenings from both hemispheres.
Mythology
The Romans established Libra as an independent constellation around the first century BCE, separating it from Scorpius. They associated the Scales with Astraea, the goddess of justice, who held a balance to weigh the deeds of mortals. Astraea was the last of the immortals to leave Earth during the decline of humanity, and she was placed in the sky as the constellation Virgo, with her scales of justice beside her as Libra. The autumnal equinox once fell within Libra, when day and night were perfectly balanced, reinforcing the symbolism of equilibrium. In Egyptian tradition, these stars were associated with the scales used by Anubis to weigh the hearts of the dead.

Zubeneschamali has been reported by some observers to have a greenish tint, making it one of the very few stars that appear green to the naked eye. The constellation contains several faint galaxies visible in larger telescopes. The ecliptic passes through Libra, so the Moon and planets regularly traverse this region, sometimes creating beautiful conjunctions.
